Starting with HP Generation 8 servers and fully implemented in Generation 9, SmartCache, substantially boosts storage I/O performance for internal disk drives without the significant cost of an all flash setup. 

 

The way it does this is by automatically moving active data to SSD and inactive data to spinning drives in real-time. Hot files stay on fast SSD indefinitely and infrequently accessed data migrates to lower cost spinning drives. Simple to explain but more complicated than it seems under the covers.
